National Online Makeup Academy (NOMA)

So I enrolled into NOMA on April 7, 2011.  It is an online makeup school hence its name.  Upon completion of the course, you will receive a makeup certificate.  I decided to enroll through this academy because I'm currently trying to complete my Master's degree, a stay-at-home wife and mother of a 6 month old, and I frequently travel between California and Hawaii.  Anyways, being an online program you go at your own pace to complete the course.  You have 6 months to do so.  Today I finally got my makeup kit that they provide. It's smaller than what I expected, but has everything you need.  (Eyeshadows, Powder, Blush, Lip pencil, Eyeliner, sponges, etc)

This academy is a great start for me to put my foot in the door in the makeup industry.  Once my husband and I settle down and have some money saved up I'll apply to beauty school.  I never realized how expensive beauty school is so I'm happy with the route I've chosen.

How are your courses going? Do you recommend this program?

My courses are going really well. It's been over a month and I just submitted my third assignment out of 9-10. I think the program is really easy b/c you literally learn how to do the makeup from youtube. I know "so why take this program?" Well, my main reason was so I could get a makeup certificate. AND if you LOVE makeup like I do, especially MAC, once you get your certificate you could apply for the macpro card which gives you 40% off on their merchandise If you calculate it, the discount makes a huge difference from what you'd usually pay.

Also, seeing how beauty school cost about $17k-$20k, I didn't have the money right now, so this will help me get started as a freelance makeup artist at the moment until I can afford to actually go to beauty school.

oh no way!! I should check this out! My sister took a course at a community college that was mac approved for fun, and i wanted to do something similar but that class always conflicts with my school schedule, but this gives me another option!
Thank for blogging about this! ;)

@Sofia I'm glad to have helped! I tried to do more research on the school before I joined but I didn't see much on NOMA so I wanted to post what I thought. =) Unfortunately the school still hasn't been approved for the MAC PRO student program, but hey, if you can finish in less than 6 months (which is definitely possible) you'll be able to get the MAC PRO card soon!

What course did your sister take that was mac approved???

Yah :( but the mac pro is good enough for me. Idk what it was called but it was like a 6 week intro course and cost like $500 at least and they used mostly Mac makeup and that upon completion she would be able to qualify for the mac student program and pro card. I would do it if I lived closer there and if I had time. As a premed all these sciences classes keep me at school until the evening :(

Oh wow! that sounds like a cool course. You should try NOMA then. And it's cheaper. It was less than $400. I think something like $349 and they send you a makeup kit (I didn't think it was that great but it had almost everything you needed).

That's cool that you're premed though! I'd love having someone who was a MUA AND a doctor! Lol.

Nah, you don't have to. I haven't even touched my kit since I already had all the colors I needed in my mac collection. The only thing is you'll have to use models for a few assignments and they need to bring their own foundation (unless you happen to have different shades). So usually I just had my models bring their own foundation and powders.

Hey I was wondering how this went for you and if you got your macpro discount card? I was really looking into the NOMA and I want to make sure it's a decent school and you get the benefits from it.
